SIGHTSEEING

Yokai Art Museum

Explore four exhibition spaces tucked into old storehouses and other historic buildings in Tonosho’s winding old town. The museum’s collection includes more than 1,000 yokai: supernatural beings from Japanese folklore, alongside creatures imagined by contemporary artists. Museum 04, set in a traditional house, features a huge ceiling painting, Mononoke Mandala, by Shodoshima artist Chuhei Yagyu. The lanes and buildings are as much a part of the visit as the artworks. Take your time finding your way between them.

Allow yourself a few detours: getting a little lost is part of the experience.

SIGHTSEEING

Maze Town, Tonosho

Tonosho’s historic Honmachi district is a maze of narrow, twisting lanes. It was also familiar ground for Hosai Ozaki, a poet known for his free-form haiku. Rather than heading for a single landmark, walk past the houses, temples and small shops that appear around each corner. The streets between the sights offer a glimpse of everyday island life. Pair a walk here with the Yokai Art Museum, and leave room to follow a lane simply because it catches your eye.

Twenty Four Eyes Movie Studio

Step into a seaside film set with wooden houses and a schoolhouse that evoke early twentieth-century Japan. Built for the film Twenty-Four Eyes, the village has been preserved as a place to explore Shodoshima’s connections with cinema and literature. You can also explore the Sakae Tsuboi Literary Museum, Kinema no Iori café and Gallery Shochikuza cinema. You do not need to know the story beforehand: the classrooms, wooden buildings and sea views make this a rewarding stop in their own right, and help explain why filmmakers have long been drawn to the island.

SIGHTSEEING

Angel Road

At low tide, a sandy path emerges from the sea at Angel Road, one of Shodoshima’s best-known coastal sights. You can walk across the sandbar to Nakayoshima, but the island itself is private property: do not enter without permission. Near the entrance, the Yakusoku no Oka lookout offers a view across the sandbar and the Seto Inland Sea. Looking for shells along the path is a simple pleasure, especially with children.

The view changes with the tide and light. The path appears at different times each day, so check Tonosho Town’s tide table before planning your visit.

Nishinotaki Temple — Pilgrimage Temple 42

Set against a rocky mountainside, Nishinotaki is Temple 42 on Shodoshima’s 88-temple Buddhist pilgrimage. Traditionally associated with the monk Kukai, the temple has a history of more than 800 years. A spring lies in the cave at its inner sanctuary. Its historic bronze bell, inscribed with the year 1275 and designated an Important Cultural Property, is now kept at Choshoji Temple. A wildfire destroyed the temple complex in 1970, and its halls were rebuilt in 1977. The setting offers more than a sea view: it reveals how Buddhist traditions have taken root in this rugged landscape.

Make the trip into the hills to discover a quieter side of Shodoshima beyond its coast.

SIGHTSEEING

Shodoshima Olive Park

Olive groves and herb gardens spread across a hillside overlooking the Seto Inland Sea. Alongside the Olive Memorial Hall, you will find the white Greek-style windmill and Corico, a shop housed in a set used for the live-action film Kiki’s Delivery Service. It is a popular photo spot, but give yourself time to do more than take a picture. Walk between the olive trees, pause on the hill and enjoy the sea breeze: the setting is best appreciated at an unhurried pace.

Togatasaki Carp Streamers

Each spring, colourful koinobori—carp-shaped streamers traditionally flown for children’s healthy growth—catch the sea breeze at Togatasaki on the island’s western tip. This community tradition began in 1990. This is a seasonal tradition kept alive by local residents, with the sea as its backdrop. If your stay coincides with the display, it is worth a detour. Dates vary each year, so check the Shodoshima Tourism Association’s latest event information before setting out.

Kankakei Ropeway

The cable car ride from Koun Station to the summit takes about five minutes, with views of steep rock formations, the deep Kankakei Gorge and the Seto Inland Sea beyond. Autumn foliage is a highlight, but fresh spring leaves and winter mountain scenery offer different reasons to visit. Shodoshima is often pictured as a seaside destination; this short ride reveals the scale of its mountainous interior. Even if you are driving around the island, consider taking the cable car for the views.

Yamaroku Soy Sauce

Discover how soy sauce is fermented in large wooden barrels at Yamaroku. Microorganisms living in the barrels and brewery buildings are essential to the process; the site includes two nationally registered historic fermentation warehouses. You can visit the fermentation warehouse free of charge, without a reservation. Yamaroku also works to pass on barrel-making skills through its Kioke Craftsmen Revival Project. A visit offers a chance to see a traditional craft still being practised and developed for the next generation.

At the adjoining Yamaroku Chaya café, try treats such as ice cream topped with Tsuru-bishio soy sauce. To protect the brewery’s microbial environment, visitors are asked not to eat natto (fermented soybeans) before visiting.

Nonoka

Nonoka serves seasonal dishes made with ingredients from Shodoshima and the wider Kagawa region. It currently serves set-course dinners only. You must book in advance by telephone. Set aside an evening here to enjoy each course at a leisurely pace. The restaurant’s white cat may be there to greet you.

There is a personal connection, too: many of the olive trees in the SHIMASTREAM house garden came from Nonoka when its car park was renovated. We are taking good care of them.

MORIKUNI Gallery Cafe & Bar

Run by Shodoshima’s only sake brewery, this shop, café and gallery occupy a converted tsukudani factory, a building around 70 years old where foods were once simmered in soy sauce to preserve them. Browse the shop’s sake (Japanese rice wine) and the gallery’s brewing tools. At the café, try dishes and sweets made with sake lees, the solids left after sake is pressed, or a cup of amazake, a sweet rice drink. On an island known for soy sauce and preserved foods, MORIKUNI offers another way into its fermentation culture, while giving an old working building a new life.

Visit the neighbouring MORIKUNI BAKERY as well to taste another side of the brewery’s craft.

Ginshiro Noodles

Ginshiro has made hand-stretched noodles since 1965, continuing a Shodoshima tradition that goes back around 400 years. Its range includes somen (thin wheat noodles), black sesame somen, somen made with locally grown olives, and hand-stretched udon (thicker wheat noodles). The main shop is about a minute’s walk from Tonosho Port. On weekdays, except from June to August, you can tour the factory and try hashiwake: separating the noodle strands with chopsticks. Seeing the work behind the finished noodles adds a new dimension to this island speciality.

Inoue Seikoen Rashiku Garden

Inoue Seikoen’s roots are in olive and citrus farming. At its Rashiku Garden complex, the main shop sells food, cosmetics and household items, while Chuzaemon restaurant pairs olive oil with seasonal ingredients from the island and the Seto Inland Sea. A visit shows how the farm’s olives find their way into food and everyday products, as well as souvenirs. It is another way to understand the island through the work people do here.

The complex is about a ten-minute walk from Ikeda Port, making it an easy stop if you are arriving or departing there.

That sense of a living, evolving island culture is one of the reasons we enjoy visiting.

Pick up ingredients to cook in your own kitchen and gather around the table whenever it suits you. Olive Onsen Manten no Yu, a hot-spring bathhouse, is on the same site.

PORTS & BOAT TRIPS

Fukuda Port

On Shodoshima’s northeastern coast, Fukuda Port connects the island with Himeji in Hyogo Prefecture in about one hour and forty minutes. Ferries carry cars and motorcycles, making this a useful arrival point from the Kansai region. The surrounding district has a different feel from Tonosho or Ikeda, with a quiet stretch of coast between the mountains and the sea. Todehama Beach is nearby. Watch the island draw closer from the ferry and enjoy the crossing as part of your island visit.

Sakate Port

Sakate Port on the island’s southeastern coast serves routes connecting Shodoshima with Kobe and Takamatsu. It has supported island industry and tourism since opening in 1927. In 2025, the new Sakaterasu terminal added waiting areas, local-product shops, places to eat and spaces for remote work and socialising. Nearby soy sauce makers, the MORIKUNI sake brewery and Mamemame Beer make the port a starting point for exploring island craftsmanship.

Rather than passing straight through after arrival, take time to explore the port town and its local producers.

Seto Yacht Charter

Based at Uno Port, Seto Yacht Charter offers private catamaran yacht and boat trips around islands including Naoshima, Teshima and Shodoshima. You can discuss a route tailored to how you want to spend your time on the Seto Inland Sea.

Unlike a scheduled ferry, a charter lets you discuss the islands and ports you would like to visit. Boarding from a port on Shodoshima may also be possible by arrangement. If you are staying at SHIMASTREAM house, ask when booking whether you can board and disembark at Ikeda Port, which is convenient for the property. Departures from Ikeda must be arranged in advance.

We have taken a charter boat to Naoshima ourselves. Seeing its yellow pumpkin sculpture from the water felt quite different from approaching on land. Time at sea becomes part of the visit, rather than simply a way to reach an island.

Weather and other conditions may cause route changes or cancellations. Boarding locations, routes and prices vary by vessel and plan, so confirm the details when booking.

FAQ

Planning Your Visit

How do I get to Shodoshima?

Shodoshima has no airport or bridge to Japan’s larger islands, so you will need to arrive by boat. Ferries and passenger services depart from ports including Takamatsu, Himeji, Shin-Okayama and Kobe. Your arrival port—such as Tonosho, Ikeda, Fukuda or Sakate—determines where your island journey begins. Some routes carry cars and motorcycles, allowing you to continue by road.

Journey times, booking arrangements and frequency vary by route. Once your travel dates are set, check the relevant operator’s current timetable.

For directions to your accommodation, see the access information for SHIMASTREAM house or SHIMASTREAM kannonzaki.

Shodoshima Tourism Association: getting here (Japanese)

Do I need a car on the island?

Buses and taxis are available, but a car is convenient if you want to visit several places. You can bring one on a vehicle ferry or hire one on the island. If travelling by bus, choose your accommodation and destinations first, then check service frequency and the last departure of the day.

Should I book ferries and restaurants in advance?

Ferry reservation requirements vary by route. Some restaurants, such as Nonoka, require advance booking, while places such as Mamemame Beer may change their opening days with the season. Use each listing’s official website, Instagram or information link to check the latest arrangements before visiting.

When can I walk across Angel Road?

The sandbar at Angel Road appears only around low tide, and the times change daily. Plan your visit using Tonosho Town’s Angel Road information and tide table (Japanese).

Where can I buy groceries for cooking at my accommodation?

Marunaka Shin-Tonosho stocks food, drinks and daily essentials. Olive Onsen Manten no Yu welcomes day visitors on the same site, so you can combine grocery shopping with a bath before returning to your accommodation.

What can I do in bad weather?

Rough weather may disrupt ferries and the Kankakei Ropeway. Check your ferry operator’s service information before setting out. On the island, keep plans flexible: enjoy a hot-spring bath, take time over a meal or spend a quiet day at your accommodation.

Which places are good to visit with children?

Families can look for shells at Angel Road, try kawarake throwing—tossing small clay discs—at Kankakei Ropeway, or explore the wooden schoolhouse at Twenty Four Eyes Movie Studio. For meals, Kitchen Kuishinbo is one option with dishes that appeal to different generations.
